Brave’s Shields system blocks ads, trackers, fingerprinting, and cross-site cookies by default, without needing an extension or extra configuration.

For YouTube specifically, Brave’s built-in blocker handles ads better than Chrome MV3-era alternatives. I watched a long YouTube session through Brave on Firestick and didn’t hit a pre-roll. That’s the gap uBlock Origin Lite can’t close on Chrome.

3. Firefox + uBlock Origin — Best for Extension Power Users

Firefox’s extension model is entirely independent of Chrome’s MV3 changes. It still supports the full uBlock Origin — which means you get the same dynamic filtering that Chrome is actively removing. If you’ve built up custom filter lists in uBlock Origin over the years, Firefox is the browser that lets you keep using them.

The setup is similar to Brave: Firefox for Fire TV requires sideloading, and the Fire TV version of Firefox has historically been less polished for D-pad navigation. But if extension-based blocking is what you’re used to, it works.

4. AdGuard DNS — The Free Network-Level Option

AdGuard DNS works on the same principle as Surfshark’s CleanWeb — blocking at the DNS level before ads load — but without the VPN component. You can configure it on your router (which then covers every device on your network automatically) or set up a WireGuard profile on the Firestick itself that routes DNS requests through AdGuard’s servers.

It’s effective at catching known ad domains across all apps, not just browsers. The tradeoff: some sites behave oddly when DNS-level blocking is aggressive, which is why the ability to toggle it off temporarily is genuinely useful. It’s also a more technical setup than installing an app — if you’re comfortable in router settings, it’s worth considering. If not, Surfshark is the easier path to the same result.

5. YouTube Premium — The Nuclear Option for YouTube Ads

If the ads you’re specifically trying to avoid are YouTube pre-rolls and mid-rolls, YouTube Premium remains the most reliable solution in 2026 — because it removes ads at the source. No extension, no DNS trick, no arms race with Google’s own anti-adblock detection running on the YouTube servers.

The tradeoff is obvious: you’re paying Google directly to stop showing you ads. But if you’re a heavy YouTube viewer and every other solution keeps getting neutralized by Google’s countermeasures, it’s the one option that can’t be broken by a Chrome update.

6. uBlock Origin Lite (Chrome MV3 Version) — Skip It

Worth naming just so you don’t waste time on it: uBlock Origin Lite is the MV3-compatible version of uBlock Origin. It sounds like a reasonable upgrade path, but according to current testing it cannot block YouTube ads at all, and its overall filtering capability is significantly weaker than the full version. If someone has recommended it to you as a Chrome replacement for the original uBlock Origin, it isn’t — not even close.

For most Firestick users, this is the cleanest path — about three minutes of setup, and it protects every app on your device, not just browser tabs.

The Bottom Line

Chrome’s Manifest V3 rollout is a real change with real consequences. If you’ve been relying on uBlock Origin or a similar extension in a Chrome-based browser, that blocking is getting weaker with each update and will be gone entirely by Chrome 151. That timeline is in motion right now.

For Firestick users, the honest take is that browser-based blocking was always the fragile approach on a streaming device. Network-level blocking through something like Surfshark CleanWeb is more durable — it works across every app on your device, doesn’t depend on any browser’s extension rules, and protects your privacy from ISP surveillance at the same time.
