How to Sideload Apps on Firestick (Complete 2026 Guide)
Learn how to sideload APKs on Amazon Firestick and Fire TV with 5 proven methods. Updated for 2026 with VegaOS warnings, Amazon's new blocking system, and safety tips.
Your Firestick can run way more apps than Amazon wants you to know about. Out of the box, you’re stuck with whatever the Amazon Appstore offers — but with about five minutes of setup, you can install virtually any Android app through a process called sideloading.
I’ve been sideloading apps on Fire TV devices for years, and I just spent two weeks retesting every method on my Firestick 4K Max after Amazon’s late-2025 crackdown. Some things have changed — including a brand-new device that blocks sideloading entirely — but the core process still works on every Fire OS device. Here’s exactly how to do it.
To sideload apps on Firestick: enable Install Unknown Apps in Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options, then install the free Downloader app from the Amazon Appstore to download and install APK files directly. The whole process takes about 5 minutes. This works on all Fire OS devices — but not the new Fire TV Stick 4K Select running VegaOS.
What I Tested For
- All five sideloading methods on a Firestick 4K Max (2nd Gen)
- Fire OS 7.6 with the latest January 2026 security patches
- Which apps Amazon blocks vs. which install without issues
- Transfer speeds and reliability for each method
- Ease of use for beginners vs. advanced users
What Is Sideloading (and Why Bother)?
Sideloading means installing apps from outside the Amazon Appstore. Since Fire OS is based on Android, your Firestick can run standard Android APK files — you just need to tell it to accept them.
Why would you want to? A few reasons:
- Apps Amazon doesn’t carry — SmartTube (ad-free YouTube), certain emulators, and niche tools aren’t in the Appstore
- Newer versions — Sometimes the Play Store version of an app is more up-to-date than Amazon’s
- Open-source apps — Projects like Kodi and Jellyfin distribute APKs directly from their websites
- Region-locked apps — Apps not available in your country’s Appstore can be sideloaded manually
Amazon’s 2025–2026 Anti-Piracy Crackdown
Before we get into the how-to, you need to know what’s changed. Amazon rolled out a two-stage blocking system in late 2025:
Stage 1 (November 2025): Warning screens appeared when you launched certain sideloaded apps. There was a “Launch Anyway” button to bypass it.
Stage 2 (January 2026): The “Launch Anyway” option was removed. Fire OS now scans APK package names during installation against a database maintained by the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE). Flagged apps are blocked before they can even install.
What Still Installs Fine
- Kodi — Completely unaffected. It’s a legitimate open-source media player.
- Stremio — No issues installing or running
- SmartTube — Ad-free YouTube alternative, installs normally
- VPN apps — Not targeted by the blocking
- Utility apps — Mouse Toggle, Wolf Launcher, file managers, etc.
- Plex, Jellyfin — Legitimate media server apps
What Gets Blocked
Amazon blocks apps identified as providing access to unlicensed content. The specific list isn’t public, but it targets apps the ACE has flagged as piracy tools. If you see an “App installation blocked” message, that’s Amazon’s new system in action.
Before You Start: Enable Developer Options
Every sideloading method requires the same one-time setup. You need to unlock Developer Options and allow your Firestick to install apps from outside the Appstore.
Enable Sideloading on Your Firestick
3 stepsUnlock Developer Options (Hidden by Default)
Developer Options are hidden on newer Fire OS versions. Here’s how to reveal them:
- Go to Settings → My Fire TV (or Device & Software on some models)
- Select About
- Click on your device name (e.g., “Fire TV Stick 4K Max”) 7 times in a row
- You’ll see a message: “You are now a developer”
If you see “No need, you are already a developer” — you’re already set.
Enable Install Unknown Apps
Now flip the switch that lets you sideload:
- Go back to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options
- Select Install Unknown Apps
- You’ll see a list of apps — toggle ON for the app you’ll use to sideload (like Downloader)
- Confirm by selecting Turn On on the warning popup
(Optional) Enable ADB Debugging
Only needed if you’re using the ADB/computer method:
- In Developer Options, turn on ADB debugging
- Note your Firestick’s IP address from Settings → My Fire TV → About → Network
That’s the “scary” part done. You’ve basically told your Firestick to trust you.
Method 1: Downloader App (Easiest — My Recommendation)
The Downloader app by AFTVnews is the gold standard for sideloading. It’s free, it’s in the Amazon Appstore (so no chicken-and-egg problem), and it’s been the go-to tool for years.
My testing notes: I’ve used Downloader on every Fire TV device I’ve owned. It’s fast, reliable, and the shortcode feature saves a ton of time. Downloads typically finish in 10–30 seconds depending on file size and your connection speed.
Sideload with Downloader
4 stepsInstall Downloader from the Amazon Appstore
- From the Firestick home screen, select the Search icon (magnifying glass)
- Type “Downloader”
- Select the orange Downloader app by AFTVnews — it’s the one with millions of downloads
- Click Download or Get
- Wait for the install to finish
Allow Downloader to Install Apps
- Go to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install Unknown Apps
- Find Downloader in the list
- Toggle it ON
Download Your APK
- Open the Downloader app
- In the URL field, type the full download URL for your APK — or enter a shortcode (a 5–6 digit number that redirects to the download)
- Click Go
- The file downloads directly to your Firestick
For shortcodes to popular apps, check our Firestick Downloader codes list.
Install and Clean Up
- When the download completes, select Install
- Once installed, click Done (or Open to launch right away)
- Downloader prompts you to delete the APK file — always say yes to save storage space
✓ Pros
- Free and available directly from the Amazon Appstore
- Shortcode support — no need to type long URLs
- Built-in browser for navigating download sites
- Prompts to clean up APK files after install
✕ Cons
- Requires typing URLs or codes with the Fire TV remote (tedious)
- Can't browse your phone's files — download only
Downloader
- Free from the Amazon Appstore
- Shortcode support for easy downloads
- Works on all Fire OS devices
Method 2: Send Files to TV (Best for Phone Users)
If you already have the APK on your Android phone, Send Files to TV lets you beam it wirelessly to your Firestick. No URLs to type, no codes to remember — just tap and transfer.
My testing notes: Transfer speeds were solid on my 5GHz WiFi network — a 30MB APK transferred in about 5 seconds. On 2.4GHz it took closer to 15 seconds. Both devices need to be on the same WiFi network.
Sideload with Send Files to TV
4 stepsInstall the App on Both Devices
- On your Firestick: Search for “Send Files to TV” in the Amazon Appstore and install it
- On your Android phone: Install the same app from the Google Play Store
- Make sure both devices are connected to the same WiFi network
Download the APK on Your Phone
On your phone, download the APK file you want to install from a trusted source (APKMirror, the developer’s website, etc.). Save it to your Downloads folder.
Send the File
- Open Send Files to TV on your Firestick and select Receive
- Open the app on your phone and select Send
- Browse to the APK file and select it
- Choose your Fire TV device from the list
- Wait for the transfer to complete
Install the APK
- Once the transfer finishes, the file appears on your Firestick
- Click the file to start installation
- Select Install, then Done or Open
✓ Pros
- No URL typing — perfect if you hate the Fire TV remote keyboard
- Fast wireless transfers over WiFi
- Works with any APK already on your phone
- Free on both platforms
✕ Cons
- Requires an Android phone (iOS can't send APKs this way)
- Both devices must be on the same WiFi network
- Extra step — download on phone first, then transfer
Method 3: Web Browser on Your Firestick
You can skip Downloader entirely and use Silk Browser (Amazon’s built-in browser) to download APKs directly from websites.
My testing notes: This works, but navigating websites with a Fire TV remote is painful. Silk Browser is functional but clunky for this purpose. I’d use this as a backup method if Downloader isn’t cooperating.
- Open Silk Browser from your apps (it’s preinstalled on most Fire OS devices)
- Navigate to a trusted APK source like APKMirror
- Find the app you want and download the APK file
- Open the downloaded file and select Install
Method 4: ADB from a Computer (Advanced)
ADB (Android Debug Bridge) lets you push APK files from your computer to your Firestick over your local network. This is the most powerful method — you can batch-install apps, run shell commands, and automate things — but it requires some command-line comfort.
My testing notes: ADB is my go-to when I’m setting up a fresh Firestick with 5+ apps. I can install everything in under a minute from my laptop. But for casual users installing one app? Downloader is way easier.
Prerequisites
- Android SDK Platform-Tools installed on your computer (download here)
- ADB Debugging enabled on your Firestick (see the setup section above)
- Both devices on the same WiFi network
Steps
- On your Firestick, find your IP address at Settings → My Fire TV → About → Network
- On your computer, open Terminal (Mac/Linux) or Command Prompt (Windows)
- Navigate to the platform-tools folder
- Connect to your Firestick:
adb connect 192.168.1.100:5555
- Accept the connection prompt on your Firestick’s screen
- Install the APK:
adb install /path/to/your-app.apk
- Wait for the “Success” message
✓ Pros
- Fastest method for installing multiple apps
- Can automate installs with scripts
- No need for remote keyboard typing
- Full shell access for advanced troubleshooting
✕ Cons
- Requires a computer and command-line knowledge
- Initial setup is more involved
- Security risk if ADB Debugging is left enabled
Method 5: Cloud Storage
Upload your APK files to Google Drive, Dropbox, or another cloud service, then download them on your Firestick using a file manager app.
My testing notes: This is more roundabout than the other methods, but it’s handy if you prep APK files on your computer and want to access them across multiple Fire TV devices. I use X-plore File Manager for its cloud storage integration.
- Upload your APK files to a cloud service (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.)
- Install a file manager on your Firestick — X-plore File Manager or File Commander from the Amazon Appstore
- Open the file manager, connect to your cloud storage account
- Download the APK and install it

→Where to Find Safe APK Files
Only download APKs from sources you trust. Sideloading is safe — downloading from sketchy sites is not.
| Source | Trust Level | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 🏆 APKMirror (apkmirror.com) | Very High | Every APK manually verified with cryptographic signature checks |
| APKPure (apkpure.com) | High | Clean interface, signature verification |
| Official developer websites | High | Direct from the source (e.g., kodi.tv, smarttube's GitHub) |
| Aptoide TV | Medium | Alternative app store designed for TV interfaces |
| GitHub Releases | High | Open-source projects distribute builds here |
Finding Sideloaded Apps After Installation
Sideloaded apps don’t always show up on your Fire TV home screen. Here’s how to find them:
- Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → scroll to your app and select Launch application
- Long-press the Home button → select the app switcher to see recent apps
- Install a custom launcher like Wolf Launcher to organize all your apps in one place

Fire OS vs. VegaOS: Which Devices Support Sideloading?
This is the big question going into 2026. Amazon released the Fire TV Stick 4K Select in October 2025, and it runs a completely different operating system called VegaOS — a Linux-based OS that does not support Android APKs at all.
| Feature | Fire OS (Android) | VegaOS (Linux) |
|---|---|---|
| 🏆 Sideloading | Yes (with restrictions) | No |
| APK Support | Yes | No |
| ADB Debugging | Yes | No |
| Current Devices | All Fire TV except 4K Select | Fire TV Stick 4K Select only |
| Future Outlook | Continuing on existing devices | Expanding to more devices |
Amazon has confirmed VegaOS will eventually roll out to more devices. But as of February 2026, only the Fire TV Stick 4K Select runs VegaOS. Every other Fire TV device — including the Firestick 4K Max, Firestick 4K, Firestick HD, Firestick Lite, and Fire TV Cube — still runs Fire OS and fully supports sideloading.
Bottom line: If sideloading matters to you, avoid the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and grab any other Fire TV device instead. Check our Fire TV Stick 4K vs 4K Max vs Lite comparison for help choosing.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Developer Options Not Visible
Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About → tap your device name 7 times. You’ll see “You are now a developer” and the option appears under My Fire TV.
”App Installation Blocked” Message
This is Amazon’s new anti-piracy system (see above). It only blocks apps flagged as piracy tools. Legitimate apps like Kodi, Plex, VPN apps, and utility tools are not affected. There’s no workaround for blocked apps — Amazon checks package names at install time.
”Parse Error” When Installing
This usually means:
- The APK file is corrupted — re-download it from a trusted source
- The APK is an app bundle (.apkm/.xapk) instead of a standard .apk — Fire TV only supports standard APKs
- Your Firestick doesn’t have enough storage space — clear cache or delete unused apps
- The app requires a newer Android version than your Fire OS supports
Sideloaded App Doesn’t Appear on Home Screen
This is normal. Go to Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications, find your app, and select Launch application. Or long-press the Home button to access the app switcher.
App Crashes or Doesn’t Work Properly
Some apps are designed for phones, not TVs. They may need a mouse cursor to navigate — install Mouse Toggle to add one. If the app still crashes, try a different version from APKMirror — sometimes the latest version has TV compatibility issues.
ADB Connection Refused
Make sure:
- ADB Debugging is enabled in Developer Options
- Both devices are on the same WiFi network
- You’re using the correct IP address (check Settings → My Fire TV → About → Network)
- You accepted the connection prompt on the Firestick screen
Protecting Your Privacy While Sideloading
When you’re downloading files from third-party websites, your ISP can see what you’re doing. A VPN encrypts your traffic and keeps your activity private. Here’s what I recommend:
- Use a VPN — Encrypts your traffic and prevents ISP throttling. See our best VPNs for Firestick guide for the top picks
- Stick to trusted sources — Only download from APKMirror, official developer sites, and GitHub
- Check app permissions — If a flashlight app wants access to your contacts, something’s wrong
- Keep apps updated — Outdated apps may have known security vulnerabilities
- Disable ADB when not in use — An open ADB port is a security risk on shared networks

Frequently Asked Questions
Is sideloading legal?
Yes, completely. Sideloading is a built-in Android feature — you’re just installing software from outside the official store. It’s the same as installing a program from a website on your computer instead of the Microsoft Store. What matters is what the apps do — using apps to access pirated content is illegal in most countries.
Will sideloading void my warranty?
No. Amazon explicitly supports the ability to install apps from unknown sources (that’s why the toggle exists in Settings). Sideloading doesn’t modify your device in any permanent way.
Can Amazon see what apps I sideload?
Yes. Fire OS can detect installed apps, and as of January 2026, Amazon actively scans package names during installation. If privacy is a concern, a VPN helps protect your download activity, but Amazon can still see what’s installed on the device itself.
Why does Amazon block some sideloaded apps?
Amazon partners with the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) to identify apps used primarily for accessing pirated content. These apps get added to a blocklist that Fire OS checks during installation. Legitimate apps like Kodi, Plex, Stremio, and VPN apps are not affected.
Can I sideload on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select?
No. The 4K Select runs VegaOS (Linux-based), which doesn’t support Android APK files. If sideloading is important to you, choose any other Fire TV device.
Summary
Sideloading opens up your Firestick to a world of apps beyond the Amazon Appstore. Here’s the quick version:
- Enable Developer Options by tapping your device name 7 times in Settings → About
- Turn on Install Unknown Apps for your sideloading tool (Downloader, Silk Browser, etc.)
- Use the Downloader app for the easiest experience — it’s free and handles everything
- Avoid the Fire TV Stick 4K Select if you want to sideload (VegaOS doesn’t support it)
- Stick to trusted APK sources like APKMirror and official developer websites
- Use a VPN for privacy when downloading files from third-party sites
