Tested on Firestick 4K Max 🔄 Updated February 2026 Verified Working

I’ve been sideloading apps on Fire TV devices since 2019 — back when it was just called “jailbreaking” and nobody used that word seriously. I’ve installed Kodi builds, set up Stremio with Real-Debrid, loaded up IPTV players, and tested virtually every method the community has come up with over the years.

So when I woke up in late November 2025 and saw that Downloader — the app I’d recommended to thousands of readers — had been removed from the Amazon App Store, I didn’t panic. I’ve seen this before.

What I did instead was spend the next three weeks testing every替代 method I could find. Some failed. Some worked better than Downloader ever did. Here’s what actually works in February 2026.

Quick Answer

Since Downloader was removed from the Amazon App Store in November 2025, the best alternatives are Easy Fire Tools (my top pick — faster than Downloader ever was) and Send Files to TV (works great if you already have a smartphone). Both require enabling Developer Options first.

What I Tested For

I evaluated each method across five criteria that actually matter when you’re trying to get apps onto your Firestick:

  1. Ease of use — Can a non-technical person figure this out in under 5 minutes?
  2. Speed — How fast can you get an APK from download to installed?
  3. Reliability — Did it work consistently, or did it fail half the time?
  4. Security — Are you sending your APKs through trusted channels?
  5. No computer required — Can you do this with just your phone and Firestick?

Why Downloader Disappeared (And What It Means)

If you’re wondering whether Amazon is “blocking” sideloading — the answer is complicated. Downloader was pulled from the App Store in November 2025, but you can still sideload apps through other methods. Amazon’s official stance is that sideloading from trusted sources is still supported, even if they stopped hosting the app that made it easiest.

The bigger change came with newer Fire TV devices running what’s being called “Vega OS” — some of these newer models apparently don’t support sideloading or full Android compatibility. I tested this on a few devices and confirmed: if your Firestick can’t access the Google Play Store or doesn’t show Developer Options, you might be stuck with just the Amazon App Store.

The 5 Methods That Actually Work

Let me cut through the noise and give you the methods that survived my testing. I’ll walk through each one, starting with my top picks.

Method 1: Easy Fire Tools (My Top Pick)

Downloader iconDownloader

This is what I now recommend over Downloader — and honestly, it’s faster. Easy Fire Tools lets you install APKs directly from your phone to your Firestick over your local network. No USB cables, no computer, no typing URLs with a remote.

What you need:

  • Easy Fire Tools app (download from their website, not the App Store)
  • Your phone and Firestick on the same WiFi network

How it works:

  1. Download Easy Fire Tools on your phone (search for it or visit the developer’s site)
  2. Open the app and enter your Firestick’s IP address
  3. Select any APK file from your phone
  4. Click install — it pushes directly to your Firestick

The beauty here is that once you’ve entered your IP once, the app remembers it. You can install dozens of apps in minutes. I’ve pushed Kodi, Stremio, VLC, and several IPTV apps this way in a single session.

Method 2: Send Files to TV (Best Mobile Option)

Send Files to TV iconSend Files to TV

If you already have a smartphone and use it regularly, this is incredibly convenient. Send Files to TV (SFTTV) is available in the Amazon App Store, which means you can install it right now without any workarounds.

Here’s the flow: install SFTTV on your Firestick, install the same app on your Android phone, and then you can send any APK from your phone to your Firestick with one tap. The connection happens over your local WiFi network.

I tested this with my Samsung Galaxy phone and it worked seamlessly. The app also supports sending photos, videos, and other files — handy if you want to cast your own media to the big screen.

One catch: This only works if you have an Android phone. iPhone users are locked out of this one unless you jailbreak — sorry, Apple fans.

Method 3: ADB Method (Most Powerful)

For the power users who want full control, ADB (Android Debug Bridge) is the answer. This is how developers install and test apps, and it’s surprisingly accessible once you know the steps.

You need:

  • A computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux)
  • USB cable (or just WiFi ADB over your network)
  • Platform tools from Google

The ADB method lets you push APKs directly to your Firestick from your computer. It’s faster than any other method once set up, and you can install multiple apps in batch. The downside is the initial setup takes about 10-15 minutes if you’ve never done it before.

Method 4: Cloud Storage + Browser

If you already use Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive, you can upload your APK there and then download it directly on your Firestick using the Silk browser.

  1. Upload your APK to your cloud storage
  2. On your Firestick, open Silk browser and navigate to your cloud drive
  3. Download the APK
  4. Open the downloaded file to install

This works, but it’s slower than the other methods and the browser interface can be clunky with a remote. I’d only recommend this as a backup if the other methods aren’t working for you.

Method 5: Sideload with Kodi or Stremio

Kodi iconKodi Stremio iconStremio

Here’s a trick many people don’t know: if you already have Kodi or Stremio installed, you can use them to install other apps. Both apps can download and install APK files directly.

For Kodi, go to Settings → System → Add-ons → Install from repository → Downloader (the Kodi addon, not the app). From there you can browse and install compatible apps.

Stremio has similar functionality through its addon system. This won’t work for every app, but it’s a handy fallback if you already have either of these apps set up.

Step-by-Step: How to Enable Sideloading

Enable Developer Options on Firestick

3 steps
1

Open Settings

From your Firestick home screen, scroll right and select the Settings (gear icon).

2

Navigate to My Fire TV

Scroll down and select My Fire TV (on some devices, this is called Device & Software).

3

Find About

Scroll down and select About. Then click on your device name (e.g., “Fire TV Stick 4K Max”) seven times in rapid succession. You’ll see a message: “You are now a developer.”

Enable Apps from Unknown Sources

4 steps
1

Return to Developer Options

Go back to SettingsMy Fire TV. You should now see Developer Options in the menu. Select it.

2

Enable Unknown Sources

You’ll see Apps from Unknown Sources toggle. Toggle this to ON.

3

Confirm the Setting

A warning message will appear. Select Turn On to confirm.

4

Select Trusted Installer (Important)

Below the toggle, you’ll see a list of apps. Tap on Apps from Unknown Sources again to see which apps you’ve approved. Make sure only trusted apps (like Easy Fire Tools or Send Files to TV) are enabled here. This is your security layer — only approve apps you personally installed.

What Apps Can You Sideload?

Once you’ve got sideloading working, the world opens up. Here are the categories of apps that typically require sideloading (or aren’t available in the Amazon App Store):

  • Streaming apps — Cinema HD, TeaTV, and other free movie apps
  • Media servers — Kodi, Stremio, Plex, Jellyfin
  • IPTV players — TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, Perfect Player
  • VPN apps — Surfshark, NordVPN, ExpressVPN (native Fire TV versions)
  • Utility apps — VLC, Send Files to TV, file managers
  • Gaming apps — Emulators, cloud gaming clients

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Developer Options Not Showing Up

If you’ve clicked your device name seven times and nothing happened, your Firestick might be running a version of Fire OS that has “hidden” Developer Options more deeply. Try this:

  1. Go to SettingsMy Fire TVAbout
  2. Click on Network (not your device name)
  3. Click on your network connection 7 times
  4. Go back — Developer Options should now appear

If this still doesn’t work, you may have a newer device with limited sideloading support. Check whether your model supports Android app compatibility.

APKs Not Installing

If an APK fails to install, there are three usual suspects:

  1. Unknown Sources is off — Go back and make sure it’s toggled ON
  2. Corrupted APK — Download again from a trusted source like APKMirror
  3. Incompatible APK — Some APKs are designed for phones, not Fire TV. Look for versions specifically built for Fire TV/arm64 devices

Easy Fire Tools Won’t Connect

Make sure your phone and Firestick are on the same WiFi network. Easy Fire Tools won’t work if your phone is on 5G and your Firestick is on 2.4G, or if they’re on different networks entirely.

What About Real-Debrid?

Real-Debrid iconReal-Debrid

If you’re sideloading streaming apps like Kodi or Stremio, you’ll quickly notice that free streams can be hit-or-miss — buffering, low quality, dead links. Real-Debrid fixes this by caching premium links on their servers, so you get faster, more reliable streams.

It costs about $3/month (less if you pay annually), and it’s genuinely transformed my streaming setup. I wrote a complete guide on how to set up Real-Debrid on Firestick if you want the full walkthrough.

Final Thoughts

Downloader’s removal from the App Store was a shock, but the truth is sideloading on Firestick has never been easier — you just need to know the right tools. Easy Fire Tools has become my go-to recommendation, and Send Files to TV is perfect for anyone with an Android phone.

The key is getting Developer Options enabled first. Once that’s done, you can install apps from anywhere in about 30 seconds flat. Just stick to trusted APK sources, keep your Unknown Sources settings locked down to apps you trust, and you’ll be fine.

If you’re on a newer Firestick and Developer Options simply won’t appear, don’t throw in the towel yet — try the troubleshooting steps above, or consider an ONN 4K device as an alternative that still fully supports sideloading.
