The Amazon App Store has maybe 10% of the apps you actually want. The other 90%? Locked out — unless you know how to get around it.
Sideloading from a Windows PC is the method I use whenever I need to push an APK directly to a Fire TV device without touching the remote. It’s faster than messing around with QR codes and URLs, it’s reliable once it’s set up, and it gives you direct control over exactly what gets installed. I’ve used this workflow on my Firestick 4K Max running Fire OS 8 — and most of this guide applies to any current Fire TV device on a 500 Mbps home network.
One heads-up before we start: Amazon has been signaling tighter sideloading restrictions on some 2026 hardware. More on that in the troubleshooting section. For most devices, the ADB method below still works exactly as described.
To sideload apps from a Windows PC to Fire TV: enable ADB Debugging and Apps from Unknown Sources in Developer Options, install ADB platform tools on your PC, then run adb connect <firetv-ip>:5555 and adb install app.apk from Command Prompt. Both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network. The whole process takes about 10 minutes on first setup.
What I Tested For
Before walking you through this, I want to be clear about what “tested” means here. I ran this workflow across two Fire TV devices — a Firestick 4K Max and an older Fire TV Stick 4K — on my home network. I used ADB over Wi-Fi, pushed several APKs through Command Prompt, and documented exactly where things go wrong.

Method 1: ADB from Windows (Recommended)
This is the method I use. ADB (Android Debug Bridge) is a free command-line tool from Google — it’s the same tool Android developers use to talk to devices. Fire TV runs on Android under the hood, so ADB works perfectly.

Step 1: Unlock Developer Options on Your Fire TV
By default, Developer Options is hidden. Amazon did that on purpose.

On your Fire TV, go to Settings → My Fire TV → About. Scroll down and press the device name (not the serial number — the actual product name) seven times in a row. You’ll see a toast notification that says “No need, you are already a developer” or “You are now a developer.” That’s the unlock.
Enable ADB Debugging and Unknown Sources
Go back to My Fire TV and you’ll now see Developer Options in the list. Open it and toggle ADB Debugging to ON. Also toggle Apps from Unknown Sources (or Install Unknown Apps, depending on your Fire OS version) to ON. If you see a per-app toggle instead of a global one, enable it for the Downloader app or whichever app you plan to use as an installer.
Find Your Fire TV's IP Address
Still in settings, go to My Fire TV → About → Network. Write down the IP address — it’ll look something like 192.168.1.45. Make sure your Windows PC is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Fire TV. This is the most common setup mistake.
Install ADB Platform Tools on Windows
On your Windows PC, download the Android SDK Platform Tools from the official Android developer site. It’s a ZIP file — extract it somewhere simple like C:\adb. No installation wizard needed.
Connect to Your Fire TV via ADB
Open Command Prompt (search for cmd in the Start menu). Navigate to your ADB folder with the cd command, then run adb connect <your-firetv-ip>:5555 (replace with your actual IP). You should see a message like “connected to 192.168.1.45:5555”. If you get a connection error, double-check the IP address and make sure ADB Debugging is enabled on your Fire TV.
