How to Uninstall & Delete Apps from FireStick (2026)
Two ways to delete apps from your FireStick — the quick home screen method and the complete Settings uninstall. Step-by-step guide tested on Fire OS in 2026.
My Firestick 4K Max had gotten sluggish. The home screen was buried under apps I hadn’t opened in months — a couple of trial streaming services, three Kodi builds from experiments that didn’t pan out, and a handful of sideloaded APKs I’d completely forgotten about. Storage warnings were popping up constantly. I spent about ten minutes cleaning house using the two methods I’m going to walk you through here, and the difference was immediate.
Uninstalling apps on a FireStick is straightforward once you know where Amazon hid the option. There are two paths: the quick home-screen shortcut for most apps, and the full Settings route that also lets you clear cache and data before pulling the trigger. Both are covered below.
To uninstall an app from FireStick, go to Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications, select the app, and choose Uninstall. For a faster shortcut, highlight any app on the home screen, press the Menu button (three horizontal lines), and select Uninstall from the options. The Settings method is more thorough — it also lets you clear cache and data first.
What This Guide Covers
I tested both uninstall methods on my Firestick 4K Max running the current Fire OS build. Here’s what’s covered:
- Method 1: The full Settings uninstall (best for complete removal)
- Method 2: The home-screen shortcut (fastest for most apps)
- Clearing cache and data before uninstalling
- How to remove preinstalled apps (with honest caveats)
- How to reinstall apps you removed by accident
- Troubleshooting when the uninstall option won’t show
Method Comparison: Which One Should You Use?
Quick comparison before we dive in:
| Method | Steps Required | Clears Cache/Data | Works on All Apps | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 🏆 Settings → Manage Installed Apps | 4–5 taps | Yes (optional) | Yes | Full removal |
| Home Screen Menu Button Fastest | 2–3 taps | No | Most apps | Quick cleanup |
The Settings method is the one I use for any app that’s been causing problems — lag, crashes, storage bloat. The home-screen shortcut is fine when you just want to get something off the launcher fast.
Method 1: The Full Uninstall (Settings)
This is the recommended method. It’s a few more taps than the shortcut, but it gives you the option to clear cache and data first — which matters if the app was misbehaving or hogging space.
Settings → Manage Installed Applications
- Completely removes the app and all associated data
- Option to clear cache before uninstalling
- Exposes Force Stop, Clear Defaults, and other tools
- Works for sideloaded apps and store apps alike
How to Uninstall an App via Settings
5 stepsOpen Settings
From the FireStick home screen, navigate to the top menu bar and select Settings (the gear icon on the right side of the row).
Go to Applications
Scroll right and select Applications. This is where Amazon keeps all the app management tools.
Select Manage Installed Applications
Choose Manage Installed Applications from the list. Give it a second — it takes a moment to populate, especially if you have a lot of apps installed.
Select the App You Want to Remove
Scroll through the list and highlight the app you want to delete. Click on it to open the app detail screen.
Uninstall and Confirm
Select Uninstall. A confirmation prompt will appear — confirm to complete the removal. The app and all its data are now gone from your device.
✓ Pros
- Completely removes the app, its data, and stored files
- Gives you cache and data clearing options before uninstalling
- Access to Force Stop and other troubleshooting tools in the same menu
- Works reliably for both Amazon App Store and sideloaded apps
✕ Cons
- 4–5 navigation steps compared to 2–3 for the home screen method
- The app list in Manage Installed Applications isn't sorted by size — you'll need to scroll manually
Method 2: The Home Screen Shortcut
This is faster. You don’t even need to leave the home screen. The catch: it doesn’t clear cache or data, so if you’re removing an app that’s been causing issues, go with Method 1.
How to Uninstall an App from the Home Screen
3 stepsHighlight the App
On the FireStick home screen, navigate to the app you want to remove. Don’t open it — just highlight it with your remote’s D-pad.
Press the Menu Button
Press the Menu button on your FireStick remote — it’s the button with three horizontal lines, sometimes called the hamburger button. A contextual menu will appear.
Select Uninstall or Remove
Select Uninstall if you want to fully remove the app. You may also see Remove from Recent — that only hides it from the home screen row, it does NOT uninstall the app. Choose Uninstall for complete removal.
✓ Pros
- Fastest method — done in 2–3 button presses
- No need to navigate into Settings
- Available directly from the home screen for any visible app
✕ Cons
- Does not clear cache or data before removal
- Easy to accidentally select 'Remove from Recent' instead of 'Uninstall'
- Some preinstalled apps may not show the Uninstall option here
Clearing Cache and Data Before You Uninstall
If an app is lagging, crashing, or behaving strangely, clearing its cache and data is worth trying before uninstalling. It often fixes the problem without losing your account settings — and if it doesn’t, you can still uninstall right after from the same screen.
Navigate to Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications, select the app, and you’ll see:
- Clear cache — removes temporary files. Safe to do anytime, won’t log you out
- Clear data — resets the app completely, as if freshly installed. You’ll need to log back in
- Force stop — stops the app if it’s frozen or running in the background
- Uninstall — full removal
I use Clear cache first, then test the app. If it’s still broken, Clear data. If it’s still broken after that, Uninstall.

Can You Remove Preinstalled Apps?
Honest answer: it depends on the app.
Some preinstalled Amazon apps (like Freevee, IMDb TV, and a few others) can be fully uninstalled through Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications — you’ll see the Uninstall button just like any other app.
Others — especially core Amazon services — will only show options like Force Stop and Clear Cache. The Uninstall button either won’t appear or will be grayed out. Amazon doesn’t let you remove its core apps, and there’s no workaround without rooting the device (which isn’t something I’d recommend for everyday use).

Deleted an app you actually needed? Getting it back is easy.
For Amazon App Store apps:
- Open the Appstore from your home screen
- Go to Library (or look for a section labeled Not Installed)
- Find the app you removed — it will be listed there since your account still has a record of it
- Select it and choose Download to reinstall
For sideloaded apps:
You’ll need to sideload again using the Downloader app and the original APK source. If you’ve forgotten where you got the APK, check our Downloader codes guide for verified sources.
Troubleshooting: When Uninstall Won’t Work
Uninstall button is grayed out or missing: This is almost always a preinstalled Amazon app. You can’t fully remove it. Use Clear cache and Clear data instead.
App keeps reappearing after uninstall: Some apps are tied to Amazon account services and may reinstall automatically. Go to Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications, find the app, and check if it’s tied to any automatic update or install setting. Disabling Automatic Updates won’t stop Amazon from pushing certain apps, but it reduces it.
App won’t uninstall because it’s running: Use Force Stop from the same app detail screen first, then try Uninstall again.
Home screen still showing the app after uninstall: Restart your FireStick — Settings → My Fire TV → Restart. The home screen will refresh and the app will disappear.
For persistent issues across multiple apps, see our FireStick troubleshooting guide for a full walkthrough of common problems.
Quick Summary: The Method to Use
| Situation | Method |
|---|---|
| Quick cleanup, app is working fine | Home screen menu → Uninstall |
| App is crashing or causing problems | Settings → Manage Installed Apps → Clear cache → Clear data → Uninstall |
| Want to free up the most storage | Settings method — also clears residual data |
| Preinstalled Amazon app | Clear cache + Clear data only (full uninstall may not be available) |
| Reinstalling a removed app | Appstore → Library → Not Installed |
