How to Update Firestick (2026 Guide — OS, Apps, and Kodi)
Step-by-step instructions for updating your Fire TV OS, sideloaded apps, and Kodi. Includes fixes for stuck updates and post-update slowdowns.
Amazon pushes Fire TV updates silently, on their schedule, in stages — which means your neighbor’s Firestick already has the new UI while yours is still on the old one. Or you click Settings and there’s no update waiting, even though you’ve been reading about the February 2026 redesign for months.
I’ve been managing Fire TV devices since the original Stick, and I’ve gone through every major OS update — including the clunky 2026 home screen overhaul that hit 4K Max units first. This guide covers how to manually trigger a system update, how to update Kodi and other sideloaded apps, and what to do when the update gets stuck or makes your device slower than it was before.
To update your Firestick OS: go to Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for System Update. If nothing shows, your device is either already current or hasn’t received the staged rollout yet — wait a few days and check again. For sideloaded apps like Kodi, you update manually by downloading the new APK through the Downloader app.
What This Guide Covers
I tested the full update process on a Firestick 4K Max (2nd Gen) running the 2026 Fire OS update, plus a 3rd-gen Fire TV Stick still on the pre-redesign software. Here’s what’s in scope:
- Manually triggering a Fire TV OS system update
- What actually changed in the February 2026 UI overhaul
- Updating Kodi 21.3 Omega (the latest version as of May 2026) without losing your add-ons
- Diagnosing stuck updates, post-update lag, and sideloading blocks
One honest limitation upfront: Amazon stages updates geographically and by device model. If you don’t see an update available, it doesn’t always mean something’s broken — it might just mean your model is later in the queue.
How to Update Fire TV OS (Step-by-Step)
The system update process takes about 5-10 minutes including the auto-restart. Don’t unplug the device once it starts downloading.
Update Fire TV OS
5 stepsOpen Settings
From your Firestick home screen, navigate to the Settings gear icon in the top navigation bar. Press select on your remote.
Go to My Fire TV
Scroll right and select My Fire TV. On some older Fire OS versions, this may appear as Device & Software instead — same destination, different label.
Select About
Choose About from the menu. This is where your current Fire OS version is displayed — worth noting before you update so you can confirm the version number changed afterward.
Check for System Update
Select Check for System Update (or Install Update if one is already waiting). Your Firestick will ping Amazon’s servers and display one of three results: update available, already up to date, or no update found (staged rollout — check back in a few days).
Let It Install
If an update is available, select Install. The device will download, install, and automatically restart. The whole process runs in the background — you’ll get a notification when it’s complete. Do not unplug during this time.
What Changed in the 2026 Fire TV Update
The February 2026 update started rolling out to U.S. users on select devices — Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, and the Omni series went first. Other models, including older 4-Series TVs, were scheduled to follow by spring 2026.
The biggest changes: a completely rearranged home screen tile layout, more prominent recommendations (read: more ads), and some added personalization settings. On my 4K Max, the new home screen took about a week to feel normal — the promoted content tiles are more aggressive than the previous design, but the actual responsiveness of the UI improved noticeably.
If you’re on an older stick and haven’t seen the new UI yet, you’re likely still in the staged rollout. The manual check above won’t force a rollout that Amazon hasn’t pushed to your device yet — but it’ll install immediately once it’s available in your region.

→How to Update Kodi on Firestick (Manual)
Firestick does not auto-update sideloaded apps. Kodi will sit on whatever version you installed until you manually replace it. As of May 2026, the current stable release is Kodi 21.3 Omega (released December 14, 2025).
The good news: updating Kodi on the same major version (e.g., 21.x to 21.3) preserves your add-ons and settings. Jumping across major versions (e.g., 20 to 21) can cause add-on incompatibilities — backup your library first.
Update Kodi on Firestick
5 stepsEnable Apps from Unknown Sources
Go to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options and make sure Apps from Unknown Sources is toggled ON. If you’ve already sideloaded Kodi before, this is probably already enabled — but the 2026 update can reset developer settings on some devices.
Open the Downloader App
Launch Downloader from your apps list. If you don’t have it, search for it in the Amazon Appstore — it’s free and official. See our full Downloader guide for setup tips if you need them.
Navigate to Kodi's Download Page
In the Downloader URL bar, go to kodi.tv/download. Select Android as your platform, then choose the ARM version (this is correct for all Firestick models).
Download and Install
Tap the download link for Kodi 21.3. Once the APK downloads, Downloader will prompt you to install. Select Install — if a previous version is installed, this replaces it while preserving your settings.
Confirm the Version
After installation, open Kodi and go to Settings → System Information → Version Info to confirm you’re running 21.3 Omega. Check your add-ons and test playback before deleting the old APK.

Fixing Common Update Problems
Update Stuck or Not Downloading
The most common cause is a low-memory device choking during the download. Free up space first: Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → clear cache on the biggest apps. Then restart your Firestick and try the update check again.
If it’s still stuck, check your WiFi. Firestick updates download several hundred MB — a weak signal causes timeouts that look like errors. Move the stick to a closer outlet, or consider an Ethernet adapter if you keep having connectivity issues during updates.
Post-Update Lag and Slowdowns
This one’s frustrating and genuinely common after major Fire OS updates, especially on older sticks. Amazon optimizes new OS versions for current hardware first. If your 3rd-gen stick feels sluggish after updating, clear the system cache for individual apps — not a blanket reset, just the apps you use most.
Go to Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications, sort by size, and clear cache on the top 5-6 apps. For a more thorough fix, see our Firestick speed optimization guide.
✓ Pros
- Fire OS updates are free — no subscription or payment required
- Auto-updates mean most users never have to think about this
- System updates often improve streaming performance on current hardware
- Staged rollout means critical bugs get caught before reaching everyone
✕ Cons
- 2026 home screen update adds more ad/promoted content tiles
- Staged rollouts mean your device might be weeks behind neighbors on the same model
- Post-update lag is a real issue on older sticks (3rd gen and below)
- Kodi and sideloaded apps never auto-update — entirely manual process
- Amazon has been tightening sideloaded app restrictions with recent updates
Sideloading Blocked After Update
The 2026 update cycle reset Developer Options on some devices. If your sideloaded apps stopped launching, go to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options and re-enable Apps from Unknown Sources. If Developer Options isn’t visible, you may need to toggle it on first under My Fire TV → About (tap the Fire TV OS version 7 times to expose developer settings on some firmware versions).
”No Update Available” When You Know One Exists
Amazon uses a staged rollout — your device gets the update in a wave, not all at once. There’s no way to force-pull an update that Amazon hasn’t pushed to your device yet. Check back every few days. If you’ve been waiting weeks and everyone else on the same model has the update, try a factory reset — it sometimes resolves devices that got stuck outside the rollout queue.

Closing: One Thing Worth Doing Right After Any Update
Check your privacy settings. Amazon resets certain defaults during major OS updates — ad preferences, usage data collection, and sometimes location settings get flipped back to Amazon’s preferred state. Go to Settings → Preferences → Privacy Settings and run through the toggles.
While you’re at it, if you sideload apps or use Real-Debrid, get a VPN running before your next session. Your ISP sees everything that isn’t encrypted — a VPN closes that gap.
