I signed up for the Hulu + Live TV free trial last month to test it on my Firestick 4K Max — and I’ll be upfront: you only get 3 days, not the 7 some older articles claim. Three days is tight, but it’s enough time to test the channel lineup, DVR, and app performance before committing to $89.99/month. I went through the entire process: signup, app install, channel surfing, DVR stress-testing, and canceling before the charge hit.

The free trial gives you full access to everything — 95+ live channels, unlimited cloud DVR, plus the complete Hulu on-demand library, Disney+ (with ads), and ESPN Select. No restrictions, no “lite” version. You get the real deal for three days.

Quick Answer

To get the Hulu + Live TV free trial: visit hulu.com/live-tv, create an account, select the Hulu + Live TV plan, and enter your payment info. Your 3-day free trial starts immediately. Cancel before 11:59 PM ET the day before your billing date to avoid the $89.99/month charge. The trial includes 95+ live channels, Disney+ (with ads), ESPN Select, and unlimited DVR.

What I Tested For

  • Signup process — How long it takes and what’s required
  • Firestick experience — App performance, load times, channel switching speed
  • Channel quality — Local networks, sports coverage, picture quality at 1080p
  • DVR reliability — Does “unlimited” actually mean unlimited?
  • Cancellation — Is it painless, or do they make you jump through hoops?

I tested on a Fire TV Stick 4K Max running Fire OS 7.6.7.9 with a 200 Mbps connection.

Who Gets the Free Trial (and Who Doesn’t)

Before you get excited — not everyone qualifies. Hulu’s free trial has rules:

You qualify if:

  • You’re a brand-new Hulu subscriber (never had an account)
  • You’re an eligible returning subscriber who hasn’t had an active Hulu + Live TV subscription recently
  • You’ve never used a free trial for this specific plan before

You don’t qualify if:

  • You’re a current Hulu subscriber upgrading to Live TV
  • You’ve recently had an active Hulu + Live TV subscription
  • You’re signing up through a third-party bundle (like Spotify+Hulu or the Disney Bundle)

How to Sign Up for the Hulu + Live TV Free Trial

Hulu + Live TV Free Trial Signup

5 steps
1

Go to Hulu's Live TV Page

On your phone, computer, or even the Silk Browser on your Firestick, go to hulu.com/live-tv. You’ll see the current plans and pricing. Look for the “Free Trial” badge — if it’s there, you’re eligible.

2

Create Your Account

Click Get Started or Start Your Free Trial. Enter your email, create a password, and fill in your name and birthday. If you already have an inactive Hulu account, log in instead.

3

Select the Hulu + Live TV Plan

You’ll see two main live TV options:

  • Hulu + Live TV (with ads) — $89.99/month after trial
  • Hulu + Live TV (no ads) — $99.99/month after trial

Both include Disney+ (with ads) and ESPN Select. I tested the cheaper plan — the ads only show on Hulu’s on-demand content, not during live TV.

4

Add Your Payment Method

Enter a credit card or debit card. You won’t be charged immediately — the trial starts the moment you submit. Write down the exact date and time so you know when the 3-day window closes.

5

Install Hulu on Your Firestick

On your Firestick, go to Find > Search and type “Hulu”. Select the app and click Get (or Download). Once installed, open it and sign in with the account you just created. You’re in.

What You Get During the Free Trial

Your trial includes everything a paying subscriber gets — no feature gates, no limitations. Here’s the breakdown:

Live TV Channels (95+)

The channel lineup is one of Hulu’s strongest selling points. During my trial, I had access to:

  • Broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox (local affiliates based on your ZIP code)
  • Sports — ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, FS2, TNT Sports, NFL Network, MLB Network, Golf Channel, Big Ten Network
  • News — CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ABC News Live, CNBC
  • Entertainment — FX, USA, Bravo, TBS, TNT, A&E, Lifetime, History, HGTV
  • Kids — Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon

Unlimited Cloud DVR

This was the feature I tested hardest. Hulu’s DVR lets you record as many shows as you want simultaneously, and recordings are stored for 9 months. During my 3-day trial, I:

  • Recorded 12 shows across different networks at the same time
  • Fast-forwarded through commercials on DVR recordings (this works — even on the ad-supported plan)
  • Watched recordings on my phone and Firestick without issues

My testing notes: The DVR is genuinely unlimited. I couldn’t find a cap on simultaneous recordings. Playback was smooth, and fast-forwarding through ads on recorded content worked every time. This alone makes Hulu competitive with YouTube TV.

Disney+ and ESPN Select Access

Your trial also unlocks Disney+ (with ads) and ESPN Select content. These are bundled automatically — you’ll access Disney+ through a separate app and ESPN content through the ESPN app or the Hulu app itself.

On-Demand Hulu Library

On top of live TV, you get access to Hulu’s massive on-demand library — thousands of movies and TV shows, including Hulu Originals. This is the same content that standalone Hulu subscribers pay $9.99/month for.

Current Hulu + Live TV Pricing (February 2026)

Here’s the full pricing picture so you know what you’re getting into after the trial:

Hulu Plans and Pricing
PlanMonthly PriceFree TrialWhat's Included
Hulu (With Ads) $9.99 30 days On-demand library only
Hulu (No Ads) $18.99 30 days On-demand, no ads
🏆 Hulu + Live TV (With Ads) $89.99 3 days 95+ channels + Disney+ + ESPN
Hulu + Live TV (No Ads) $99.99 3 days Same, no on-demand ads

Add-ons worth knowing about:

  • Unlimited Screens — $9.99/month (default is only 2 simultaneous streams)
  • Entertainment Add-on — $7.99/month (Cooking Channel, Discovery Life, MTV2, etc.)
  • Premium channels — Max, Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, and STARZ available at extra cost

Hulu + Live TV vs. the Competition

I’ve tested most of the major live TV streaming services on Firestick. Here’s how Hulu stacks up:

Live TV Streaming Services Compared
ServiceFree TrialMonthly PriceLive ChannelsDVRStreams
🏆 Hulu + Live TV 3 days $89.99 95+ Unlimited (9 mo) 2
YouTube TV Varies $82.99 100+ Unlimited (9 mo) 3
Fubo Varies $79.99 180+ Unlimited (9 mo) 2
Sling TV None $45.99+ 30-50 50 hrs 1-3
DirecTV Stream 5 days $79.99 75+ Unlimited Unlimited

Why I still picked Hulu as the winner: The Disney+ and ESPN Select bundle is included at no extra cost — and that’s what pushes the overall value above the competition. If you’d subscribe to those services separately anyway, Hulu saves you real money. YouTube TV gives you more channels and an extra stream, but you’re missing the bundled content.

How the Firestick App Actually Performs

Let me be honest about the Hulu app on Firestick — it’s good, but it’s not perfect.

What works well:

  • Channel guide loads in about 2 seconds
  • Channel switching takes 3-5 seconds (comparable to YouTube TV)
  • Picture quality is solid 1080p on most channels
  • Alexa voice commands work (“Alexa, open Hulu” and “Alexa, tune to ESPN” both work)
  • The interface is clean and easy to navigate with the Firestick remote

What could be better:

  • The app uses about 500MB of storage — significant on a Firestick with limited space
  • Occasional 1-2 second audio sync issues during live sports (restarting the stream fixes it)
  • No 4K content on live channels (some on-demand Hulu Originals support 4K)
  • Only 2 simultaneous streams by default — YouTube TV gives you 3

My testing notes: The app crashed once during a 3-hour live sports session — restarting it fixed things immediately. The most common Firestick issues I’ve seen reported are buffering and unexpected crashes. If you run into these, check our buffering fixes guide — clearing the app cache and restarting your Firestick solves 90% of problems. Hulu recommends at least 8 Mbps for live TV and 16 Mbps for 4K.

Pros

  • 95+ live channels including local networks
  • Unlimited DVR with 9-month storage and ad-skipping
  • Disney+ and ESPN Select included at no extra cost
  • Native Firestick app — no sideloading needed
  • Solid 1080p picture quality on live channels

Cons

  • $89.99/month after trial — the most expensive option
  • Only 3-day free trial (competitors may offer more)
  • Just 2 simultaneous streams without the $9.99 add-on
  • No 4K for live TV channels
  • App occasionally crashes during long sessions
  • Missing Bally Sports and NFL RedZone in base plan

Tips to Get the Most Out of Your 3-Day Trial

Three days goes fast. Here’s how I’d use them strategically:

1. Set Up DVR Recordings Immediately

As soon as you log in, go to the guide and start recording everything you’d normally watch. This lets you test the DVR quality and build up content you can binge before the trial ends.

2. Test Live Sports

If sports are a big reason you’re considering Hulu + Live TV, make sure your trial overlaps with games you care about. I timed mine around playoff games and the picture quality was excellent — stable 1080p with about a 30-second delay compared to cable.

3. Check Your Local Channels

Verify that you get ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox in your ZIP code. Local channels are a huge part of the value. If you’re missing one or two, that might be a dealbreaker. Here’s our guide on how to get local channels on Firestick for alternative methods.

4. Test the Unlimited Screens Add-On

The default 2 simultaneous streams may not cut it for households with multiple viewers. The Unlimited Screens add-on ($9.99/month) gives you unlimited streams at home and 3 on mobile. Worth testing if you’ve got a busy household.

5. Set a Cancellation Reminder — RIGHT NOW

This is the most important tip. Set an alarm for the morning of day 2. With only a 3-day trial, there’s almost no margin for error. I set a phone reminder the minute I signed up.

How to Cancel Before You’re Charged

Canceling is straightforward — Hulu doesn’t make you call a phone number. Here’s how:

Cancel Hulu + Live TV Free Trial

4 steps
1

Go to hulu.com and Log In

Visit hulu.com in any browser and log in. Click your profile icon in the top right corner and select Manage Account. Important: you need to cancel through the website — not through the Firestick app.

2

Click Cancel Under Your Plan

Scroll to your subscription section and click Cancel. Hulu will show you what you’ll lose — live TV, DVR, Disney+, ESPN Select, and the on-demand library.

3

Confirm Cancellation

Hulu will try to keep you with a discounted offer or a pause option. If you’re sure, click Continue to Cancel and then Cancel Subscription.

4

Verify You Won't Be Charged

After canceling, check your account page. It should show your plan as “canceled” with access until your trial end date. You keep full access through the remaining trial period.

My testing notes: I canceled on day 2. The entire process took about 90 seconds. Hulu offered me a discounted rate before I confirmed — which is actually a decent deal if you were on the fence. They also offered a “pause” option that freezes your subscription for up to 12 weeks with no charge.

What Happens After the Trial Ends

If you don’t cancel, Hulu charges $89.99 (or $99.99 for no-ads) to your payment method. From there, it’s a monthly subscription — cancel anytime, no contract.

If you do cancel, you keep access through the end of your trial period. After that:

  • Your DVR recordings are deleted
  • You lose access to live TV, Disney+, and ESPN Select
  • Your Hulu account stays active (you can resubscribe later)

Big Update: Hulu Is Merging Into Disney+

Here’s something you need to know if you’re considering Hulu + Live TV long-term: the standalone Hulu app is going away.

In January 2026, Disney completed the full integration of Hulu’s on-demand library into the Disney+ app. The standalone Hulu app is already being phased out — it shut down on Nintendo Switch in February 2026, and more platforms will follow throughout the year.

On the live TV side, Hulu + Live TV has merged with Fubo (the deal completed in October 2025). Disney owns about 70% of the combined company, but Fubo’s management runs operations. The combined service has nearly 6 million subscribers.

What this means for you right now:

  • The Hulu app still works on Firestick — no changes yet
  • Your channels, pricing, and DVR stay the same for now
  • Eventually, you’ll access Hulu content through the Disney+ app
  • The free trial structure may change as the transition happens

Worth keeping in mind, but it shouldn’t stop you from trying the free trial today.

Is the Hulu + Live TV Trial Worth It?

Yes — but you need to be strategic about it. Three days isn’t a lot of time, so go in with a plan. Sign up when there are games, shows, or events you actually want to watch. Test the DVR immediately. Check your local channels on day one.

The biggest thing I learned from my trial: the unlimited DVR is the real star. If you’re coming from cable and miss the ability to record shows, Hulu’s DVR is genuinely better than what most cable companies offer — unlimited recordings stored for 9 months with the ability to fast-forward through commercials.

At $89.99/month, it’s the most expensive live TV option. But once you factor in the Disney+ and ESPN Select bundle, it’s competitive. And the free trial costs you nothing to find out.

Free Alternatives to Hulu + Live TV

Not sold on paying $90/month after the trial? I get it. Here are some genuinely free options for live TV on your Firestick:

Tubi iconTubiPluto TV iconPluto TVPeacock iconPeacock
  • Tubi — 50,000+ free movies and TV shows, no account needed
  • Pluto TV — 250+ free live channels (news, sports, movies, entertainment)
  • Peacock — Free tier with limited live sports, news, and on-demand content
  • Plex — Free ad-supported movies, TV, and live channels

These won’t replace Hulu’s live sports or local channels, but for general entertainment and movies, they’re hard to beat at zero dollars per month. Check our full list of free streaming channels on Firestick for more options.

If you want to unlock more streaming options and protect your privacy while using your Firestick, a VPN is worth considering. Surfshark is our top pick — it’s fast, works great on Firestick, and costs just $2.49/month. It also stops ISP throttling, which is the #1 cause of buffering during live TV.
