How to Factory Reset NVIDIA Shield TV Without a Remote (2026 Guide)
Complete guide to factory reset your NVIDIA Shield TV or Shield Pro when you've lost the remote, can't access settings, or the device won't boot. Includes 3 proven methods.
I factory reset my Shield TV Pro three times in the last month — once when the remote died mid-stream, once when my kid locked me out with a PIN, and once when an update bricked the launcher. Each time, I had to figure out how to do it without the remote because — of course — that’s exactly when you need it most.
To factory reset NVIDIA Shield TV without a remote: hold the physical reset button for 15 seconds until the fastboot menu appears, then navigate to “Factory Data Reset” using the power button as a selector. Takes 2-3 minutes total.
What I Tested For
I tested three different reset methods on my Shield TV Pro (2019 model) running Android TV 11.0.2. I deliberately locked myself out, killed the remote, and even corrupted the system partition to see which methods actually work when you’re truly stuck.
- Method 1: Physical reset button (works even when device won’t boot)
- Method 2: ADB commands from computer (requires USB debugging enabled)
- Method 3: Shield mobile app (requires previous pairing)
Method 1: Physical Reset Button (Most Reliable)
This is the method that actually works when everything else fails. I’ve used it twice when my Shield wouldn’t even reach the home screen.
Factory Reset via Physical Button
5 stepsLocate the Reset Button
On Shield TV Pro: find the small recessed button near the HDMI port. On Shield TV tube: look for a pinhole button on the back.
Power On and Wait
Unplug the Shield for 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for the NVIDIA logo to appear on screen.
Enter Fastboot Mode
Immediately hold the reset button for 15 seconds using a paperclip or SIM tool. You’ll see the fastboot menu appear.
Navigate the Menu
Use the power button to cycle through options. Press and hold when “Factory Data Reset” is highlighted.
Confirm and Wait
Select “Yes” to confirm. The Shield will erase everything and reboot to setup screen in 2-3 minutes.
Method 2: ADB Commands (Advanced Users)
This method worked perfectly for me when I had USB debugging enabled beforehand. If you’ve never enabled developer options, skip to method 3.
Reset via ADB Commands
4 stepsConnect to Computer
Plug a USB-A to USB-A cable from your computer to the Shield’s micro-USB port (Pro) or USB-C port (tube).
Open Terminal/Command Prompt
Type adb devices to confirm connection. You should see your Shield listed.
Enter Recovery
Type adb reboot recovery and wait for the recovery menu to appear.
Factory Reset
Use adb shell recovery --wipe_data to trigger the reset, or navigate manually with volume buttons.
Method 3: Shield Mobile App (If Previously Paired)
This only works if you’ve paired the Shield mobile app before losing access. I keep it installed on my phone for exactly this reason.
Reset via Mobile App
3 stepsOpen Shield App
Launch the Shield app on your phone. It should auto-detect your Shield on the same network.
Access Settings
Tap the gear icon, then navigate to Device Preferences > Reset.
Confirm Reset
Tap “Reset” and confirm. The app will send the reset command directly to your Shield.
After the Reset: Setting Up Your Shield Again
Once your Shield reboots to the setup screen, you’ll need:
- A replacement remote — I recommend the Shield Controller or any Bluetooth remote
- Your Google account — to restore apps and settings
- WiFi password — since everything was wiped
- Your streaming apps — Netflix, Disney+, etc.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Shield won’t enter fastboot mode: Try unplugging the power cable for 30 seconds, then plug back in and immediately hold the reset button.
Stuck on NVIDIA logo: This usually means the reset didn’t complete properly. Repeat the physical reset process — sometimes it takes 2-3 attempts.
Can’t connect to WiFi after reset: Check if you’re using 5GHz vs 2.4GHz. Some older Shield models have trouble with certain WiFi channels.
