How to install the Downloader app on Firestick, enable Developer Options, and sideload any APK — plus what to do if Downloader has disappeared from your Appstore.
Tested on Firestick 4K Max 🔄 Updated May 2026 Verified Working

I’ve been sideloading apps on Fire TV devices for years, and Downloader has always been the first thing I install on any new Firestick. One click, type a URL, done. Dead simple. But in 2026, it’s gotten a little more complicated — Downloader by AFTVnews has been showing up, disappearing, and reappearing in the Amazon Appstore depending on your device and region, and some users are getting nothing but clone apps when they search.

I set up my Firestick 4K Max fresh and went through the whole process start to finish. This guide covers the standard install path, how to unlock hidden Developer Options, what to do if Downloader has vanished from your search results, and which alternatives actually work when all else fails.

Quick Answer

To install Downloader on Firestick: search for “Downloader by AFTVnews” in the Amazon Appstore and install it. Then go to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install Unknown Apps and toggle Downloader to On. If Downloader doesn’t appear in your search results, it may have been removed for your device — scroll down for working alternatives including FireSend and Apps2Fire.

What I Tested For

I ran this on a Firestick 4K Max running the latest Fire OS. My focus was:

  • Whether Downloader is still findable in the Amazon Appstore (it is — on my device, though reports vary)
  • Whether the Developer Options unlock process has changed
  • How long the full setup takes from a factory reset
  • Whether the alternatives (FireSend, Apps2Fire) are actually usable without wanting to throw the remote

Honest disclaimer: I only tested on a US-region device. If you’re in a different region, Downloader availability may differ.

What Downloader Actually Does

Downloader iconDownloaderFree

Downloader is a utility app from AFTVnews — the same site that covers Fire TV news in depth. It does two things: acts as a browser so you can navigate to any URL, and downloads whatever file is at that URL directly to your Firestick.

That second part is why it matters. Your Firestick is running Android under the hood, which means it can install APK files — the Android app format. Downloader is the bridge between “I found a URL for this APK” and “it’s installed on my TV.” Without something like Downloader, you’re stuck with whatever Amazon lets into the Appstore.

The sideloading flow looks like this:

  1. Install Downloader
  2. Tell your Firestick to trust Downloader as an install source
  3. Use Downloader to fetch an APK from a direct URL
  4. Install the APK

That’s the whole thing. The only wrinkle in 2026 is step one — getting Downloader itself onto the device.

How to Install Downloader on Firestick

Install Downloader on Firestick

6 steps
1

Search for Downloader

From the Fire TV home screen, navigate to the search bar (the magnifying glass icon at the top). Type Downloader. When results appear, look specifically for Downloader by AFTVnews — not a clone with a similar name.

2

Install the App

Select Downloader by AFTVnews from the results. Hit Download or Get. It’s a small app and installs in about 10–15 seconds on a decent connection.

3

Unlock Developer Options (if hidden)

Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About. Highlight your device name in the list — it’ll say something like “Fire TV Stick 4K Max.” Press the Select button on your remote repeatedly. After roughly seven presses, you’ll see a message saying developer options have been enabled.

4

Enable Install Unknown Apps

Now go to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options. Select Install Unknown Apps. You’ll see a list of apps. Find Downloader and toggle it to On.

5

Open Downloader and Accept the Prompt

Launch Downloader from your apps list. The first time it opens, it’ll show a welcome screen. Acknowledge it and dismiss the prompt. You’re now on the home screen with an address bar.

6

Test with a URL

Type any direct APK download URL into the address bar and press Go. Downloader will navigate to the URL, start the download, and prompt you to install when it’s finished. Select Install and you’re done.

If Downloader Is Missing from Your Appstore

This is the 2026 reality: Downloader isn’t reliably listed anymore. On my device it showed up fine, but I’ve seen enough reports — and a dedicated removal video from AFTVnews itself — to know this isn’t universal. If your Appstore search comes back empty or shows only clones, here’s what to do.

Option 1: FireSend

FireSend iconFireSend

FireSend is positioning itself as a direct replacement workflow for Downloader. The core idea is transferring APKs to your Fire TV rather than downloading them directly on-device. It’s one of the more straightforward alternatives if you have an Android phone or computer nearby.

Best Downloader Alternative

FireSend

7.8 /10
Best For: Users whose Downloader search comes up empty
Why We Picked It:
  • Works when Downloader is unavailable in your region/device
  • Transfers APKs from phone or PC to Fire TV
  • No typing long URLs with a remote
  • Requires ADB debugging to be enabled
Learn More About FireSend →

Pros

  • Useful fallback when Downloader is unavailable from the Appstore
  • No typing URLs with a D-pad — push APKs from your phone instead
  • Available as an alternative install path that bypasses the Appstore gap

Cons

  • Requires ADB debugging enabled on the Fire TV — another settings rabbit hole
  • Needs a second device (phone or PC) to push the APK from
  • Reliability and security harder to verify than the established Downloader app

Option 2: Apps2Fire

Apps2Fire takes a different approach — it works from an Android phone and sends installed apps directly to your Fire TV over ADB. This is more of a power-user method, but if you’re comfortable enabling ADB over Wi-Fi, it works cleanly.

The catch: you need an Android phone, not an iPhone. And you need to enable ADB Debugging in Developer Options alongside Install Unknown Apps. More steps than Downloader, but it’s a legit workaround when nothing else is available.

Option 3: Direct APK Transfer via File Manager

Some users skip the dedicated tools entirely and transfer APK files from a USB drive or local network storage. You’ll need a file manager app (the Amazon Appstore has a few options), but once it’s on the device you can install directly from the file manager. Setup varies, and it’s fiddlier than Downloader — but it’s completely self-contained and doesn’t rely on any third-party sideloading app being available.

How to Sideload an App Once Downloader Is Running

Once Downloader is installed and you’ve enabled it as a trusted install source, the actual sideloading process is the same every time.

Sideload an APK with Downloader

4 steps
1

Get a Direct APK Download URL

You need a direct link to an APK file — something that ends in .apk and starts downloading immediately when you paste it into a browser. Indirect links, redirect pages, or download buttons won’t work in Downloader.

2

Enter the URL in Downloader

Open Downloader. Select the address bar at the top. Use your remote or the on-screen keyboard to type the URL carefully, then press Go.

3

Wait for the Download

Downloader shows a progress bar during the download. Speed depends on your connection and the file size. A typical app APK downloads in under a minute.

4

Install and Clean Up

When the download finishes, Downloader prompts you to install the APK. Select Install. Once complete, you’ll get the option to delete the APK file — do it. You don’t need it anymore and storage on Firestick is limited.

What to Sideload Once You’re Set Up

The whole reason to go through this setup is to install apps that Amazon won’t carry. A few popular ones:

Kodi — the open-source media center. Not in the Amazon Appstore, but works great on Firestick once sideloaded. Pair it with Real-Debrid for premium streaming links. Our full guide: How to Install Kodi on Firestick.

Stremio — a cleaner, more modern alternative to Kodi. Available in the Appstore now, but knowing how to sideload means you can update it faster when new versions drop. See our Stremio install guide.

Cinema HD — one of the more popular free movie apps that isn’t on the Appstore.

Once Downloader is installed, none of these take more than a few minutes. Enter the URL, download, install, done.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Downloader not appearing in Appstore search: You may be in a region where it’s currently unavailable, or Amazon temporarily pulled it. Try searching for “AFTVnews” instead. If that also fails, use FireSend or Apps2Fire as described above.

Developer Options not showing up: You haven’t pressed the device name in About enough times. Seven presses is the number, and you need to do it relatively quickly. If you walk away mid-press, start over.

“Install Unknown Apps” toggle is greyed out for Downloader: Close Downloader completely, go into the Install Unknown Apps screen, and try again. Sometimes the app needs to be running at least once before it appears in the list.

APK won’t install — “App not installed” error: The APK may be corrupted during download, or it may be a version that’s incompatible with your Fire OS. Try a different APK source or an older version of the app.

Downloader downloaded the APK but I accidentally deleted it: Just re-enter the URL and download again. Downloader doesn’t cache anything.

For broader sideloading issues, our Firestick troubleshooting guide covers the most common problems and fixes.

Should You Bother If Downloader Is Unavailable?

Honest answer: yes — but use an alternative. Sideloading is the whole reason to own a Firestick over a Roku or Apple TV. The device runs Android, and that capability doesn’t disappear just because one app is temporarily out of the Appstore. FireSend or Apps2Fire both get you to the same place. The extra setup steps are annoying, but you only do them once.

If Amazon has permanently removed Downloader from your device or region, the alternatives are good enough that you’re not losing much. The URL-based workflow is Downloader’s main advantage, and FireSend replicates most of that.

The VPN Part You Shouldn’t Skip

Any time you’re sideloading apps — especially apps Amazon didn’t approve — your ISP can see what you’re doing. ISPs have been known to throttle heavy streaming traffic, and some flag sideloaded app activity. A VPN encrypts everything between your Firestick and the internet, so they can’t throttle what they can’t see.

Pair Downloader with Real-Debrid for Premium Streaming

If you’re sideloading Kodi or Stremio, the difference between free sources and Real-Debrid is significant — better links, faster loads, less buffering. Once Downloader is set up, getting Real-Debrid working with Kodi or Stremio is the logical next step. Check our Real-Debrid setup guide for the full walkthrough.
