I’ve been sideloading apps on Fire TV Sticks since the Downloader app was the answer to every “how do I get that on my Firestick?” question. So when I fired up a brand new Firestick 4K in early 2026 and searched the Amazon Appstore for Downloader — nothing. Completely gone. If you’ve hit the same wall, you’re not alone, and you’re not stuck.

Amazon quietly removed Downloader from the Appstore as part of a broader crackdown on tools that make sideloading too easy. It’s annoying, but the workaround takes about five minutes and doesn’t require a PC.

Why Downloader Disappeared From Your Appstore

Amazon has been tightening its grip on the Fire TV ecosystem for a while now — but pulling Downloader specifically is a significant move. For years, Downloader by AFTVnews was the de facto sideloading gateway: you’d enter a URL, grab an APK, install it, done. That simplicity was exactly the problem, from Amazon’s perspective.

The removal is targeted. It’s not a general Fire OS update issue, and it doesn’t affect every device the same way — some older Firesticks on earlier firmware still show it, while newer devices with the most recent Fire OS build come up empty. If you search for it right now and see nothing, your device has the Appstore version that excludes it.

This follows a pattern. Amazon previously cracked down on piracy app installations and has been steadily making the Vega OS ecosystem more locked-down. If you’re on a newer device, you may have already noticed other changes to what you can sideload.

The good news: they haven’t blocked sideloading entirely. Developer Options still exists. Unknown Apps can still be enabled. The pipeline just needs a different first tool.

What I Tested For

I tested this on a Firestick 4K running the latest Fire OS build as of April 2026. Specifically, I wanted to confirm:

• Whether Downloader is truly gone or just regionally unavailable
• Which Appstore-available alternatives can bootstrap the Downloader APK without a PC
• Whether the toggle for Unknown Apps stays enabled across reboots
• Whether Downloader v6.1 (the version referenced in 2026 guides) installs cleanly once retrieved

Short answer to all four: yes, it’s gone; Fire Send works; the toggle does NOT survive restarts (more on that below); and v6.1 installs and runs fine once you get it there.

The Fix: Use Fire Send to Reinstall Downloader

The cleanest path back to Downloader is a tool called Fire Send — it’s in the Amazon Appstore, it’s free, and it has enough APK-search functionality to pull Downloader without you needing to type a URL or use a browser on your phone.

The Toggle Revert Problem (Important)

Here’s the thing nobody mentions in the quick fix videos: the Unknown Apps toggle in Developer Options reverts after a restart. Every time your Firestick reboots — whether from a power cycle or an automatic update — Unknown Apps goes back to OFF for any app it was enabled for.

This means: after a reboot, if you want to install something new via Downloader, you’ll need to go back to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install Unknown Apps and re-enable the toggle for Downloader before you install.

It’s annoying. But it’s also the current reality of how Amazon has configured Fire OS. Make it a habit to check the toggle before any fresh APK install session.

Alternatives to Fire Send (If It Gets Blocked Too)

Amazon has a history of playing whack-a-mole with sideloading tools. If Fire Send disappears from the Appstore by the time you read this, here are the next options down the list.

Fire Send

The current top pick. It’s in the Appstore, it supports APK downloads, and the UI is simple enough to navigate with just a D-pad. It’s the tool this guide is built around for good reason — it’s the path of least resistance right now.

Send Anywhere

A cross-device file transfer tool. More versatile than Fire Send — if you have an Android phone with Downloader’s APK already downloaded, you can push it to your Firestick wirelessly. Slightly more setup involved, but a solid backup option.

ES File Explorer (Forks)

A full file manager that supports APK installation. The catch: ES File Explorer itself isn’t on the Amazon Appstore, so you’d need a different tool to get it — which defeats the purpose for a first-time setup. Useful if you already have some sideloading infrastructure in place.

What If You’re Starting From Scratch After a Factory Reset?

Factory resets wipe everything — including Downloader, all your sideloaded apps, and your Developer Options settings. You’ll be back at square one each time.

The short-term answer is to repeat the Fire Send process above. The longer-term answer is to back up your apps before you reset, and to treat Downloader reinstallation as a standard part of your setup routine on any new or reset Firestick.

Keeping Your Sideloaded Apps Safe
