Fire TV Cube vs 4K Max: Which Should You Buy in 2026?

I tested the Cube with Netflix 4K titles, Disney+ HDR streams, and some 4K Blu-ray rips through Kodi. The picture quality matched the 4K Max exactly — which makes sense, since both support the same HDR10 and Dolby Vision protocols. What separated the Cube was everything around the streaming.

The built-in Ethernet port matters more than you might think. WiFi works fine for most people, but if you’re pushing high-bitrate 4K streams and want to eliminate any possible buffering, hardwiring the Cube to your router is the move. I noticed fewer rebuffering pauses during heavy network traffic in my household when I switched from WiFi to Ethernet on the Cube.

Here’s the thing most reviews won’t tell you: the Fire TV Stick 4K Max delivers 95% of what the Cube does at less than half the price. I’ve watched hundreds of hours of 4K HDR content on my 4K Max — Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Kodi with Real-Debrid — and I genuinely couldn’t tell you the difference in picture quality between the two devices.

The 4K Max is the device I recommend to most people. It’s compact, portable, and powerful enough to handle anything you throw at it. The Mediatek MT8696 processor in the 4K Max is surprisingly snappy — apps launch quickly, navigation is smooth, and I rarely experience the interface lag that plagued older Firestick models.

The trade-off is storage. At 8GB, you’re more limited than the Cube. But here’s the workaround: the 4K Max supports microSD card expansion, which lets you store more apps and media locally. I picked up a 128GB card for $15 and haven’t thought about storage since.

The lack of Ethernet is the real compromise. If your WiFi is inconsistent or your router is far from your TV, you might see occasional buffering during 4K streams. You can buy an Amazon Ethernet adapter for about $25, but that closes the price gap with the Cube.

• Fire TV Stick 4K Max at $54.99 — Buy this if you want the best value. You’re getting nearly identical streaming performance, the ability to expand storage with microSD, and a price that makes sense for most households.

The real question isn’t “which is better” — it’s “which is better for you.” If you’re already spending $15/month on streaming services, the extra $85 for the Cube is hard to justify when the 4K Max does the exact same job of playing those streams.

The Verdict

After two months of daily use, I’d grab the Fire TV Stick 4K Max if I were buying today. The price-to-performance ratio is unbeatable — you get the same 4K HDR streaming quality, the same enhanced remote, and with a cheap microSD card, nearly the same storage flexibility. The Cube is excellent, but unless you specifically need Ethernet or Alexa without the TV, the extra $85 is hard to justify.

That said — if you’re a power user who sideloads heavily, needs rock-solid wired connectivity, or wants the absolute best Amazon has to offer, the Cube delivers. It’s just not for everyone.
