I’ve been setting up media players on Fire TV devices for a while now, and AMPlayer keeps coming up in the same conversation as Kodi addons and sideloaded streaming apps. It’s lightweight, it handles the formats most players choke on, and it pairs cleanly with apps like Movie HD for buffer-free playback. The only catch — it’s not in the Amazon App Store, so you have to sideload it. The good news: the process takes about five minutes if you know the right code.

Quick Answer

AMPlayer isn’t in the Amazon App Store, so you need to sideload it. The fastest method is the Downloader app with code 250931, which loads the TROYPOINT Toolbox — scroll to AMPlayer under IPTV & Media Player, download, and install. The whole thing takes under five minutes. Note: this does not work on the Fire TV Stick Select (Vega OS only).

What AMPlayer Actually Is

AMPlayer is a free multimedia player built specifically for Firestick, Fire TV, and Android TV devices. Where it earns its place is format compatibility — MPEG, AVI, WMV, MP4, and most other common video formats play without any extra codec setup. If you’ve ever had a streaming app hand off playback to an external player and had it crash or refuse the file, AMPlayer is the fix.

It also integrates automatically for subtitles and handles video files stored locally on your device or accessible through third-party streaming apps. It’s the kind of utility you install once and forget about — until you realize everything just… works.

Before You Start

AMPlayer requires sideloading, which means flipping a single setting in your Firestick’s developer options. If you’ve never done this before, it sounds more complicated than it is — you’re basically telling your Firestick to trust apps from outside the Amazon App Store.

You’ll need:

  • A Firestick 4K, 4K Max, Lite, or standard model (see the compatibility note below)
  • The Downloader app installed from the Amazon App Store
  • About five minutes

How to Install AMPlayer on Firestick (Downloader Method)

This is the method I use. The TROYPOINT Toolbox code cuts out the need to type a full URL and gets you straight to the AMPlayer download in a few taps.

Install AMPlayer via Downloader (Code Method)

6 steps
1

Enable Apps from Unknown Sources

From your Firestick home screen, go to SettingsMy Fire TVAbout → click your Fire TV Stick name 7 times to unlock Developer Options. Then go back to My Fire TVDeveloper Options → toggle Apps from Unknown Sources to ON for Downloader.

2

Install Downloader

Return to the home screen and search for Downloader in the Amazon App Store. Install it — it’s free and published by AFTVNews. If you already have it installed, just open it.

3

Enter the TROYPOINT Toolbox Code

Open Downloader and tap the URL/search bar. Enter 250931 and tap Go or Next. This code loads the TROYPOINT Toolbox, which is a hub of pre-vetted sideload apps.

4

Find AMPlayer in the Toolbox

Once the Toolbox loads, scroll down to the IPTV & Media Player category. Find AMPlayer in the list and tap it.

5

Download and Install

Tap Download. Once it finishes, tap Install. Your Firestick will verify the APK and walk you through the standard installation screen — tap Install again to confirm.

6

Delete the APK

After installation completes, tap Done (not Open). Downloader will prompt you to delete the APK file — tap Delete. This frees up storage and keeps things tidy. You can open AMPlayer from your apps list any time.

Alternative Install Methods

If the Downloader code method isn’t working for you, two other routes get you to the same place.

Method 2: APKTime

If you already have APKTime installed, you don’t need Downloader at all. Open APKTime, find the Players/Browsers category, and select AMPlayer from the list. It handles the download and installation in one step. If you don’t have APKTime yet, check our sideloading guide for setup instructions.

Method 3: Unlinked App

The Unlinked app is another route that works on both Firestick and Android TV. The process is similar — install Unlinked via Downloader, use a store code to find a repository that includes AMPlayer, and install from there. This method is more common on Android TV setups than Firestick.

AMPlayer: Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Completely free — no subscription, no in-app purchases
  • Handles MPEG, AVI, WMV, MP4, and most common formats without codec setup
  • Lightweight and optimized for Fire TV — doesn't slow down older devices
  • Integrates automatically as an external player for sideloaded streaming apps
  • Works on Firestick 4K, 4K Max, Lite, and standard models
  • Pairs cleanly with apps like Movie HD for buffer-free playback

Cons

  • Not in the Amazon App Store — requires sideloading every time you reinstall
  • Incompatible with Fire TV Stick Select (Vega OS)
  • No official support channel or update notifications — you'll need to check manually
  • Less feature-rich than MX Player for power users who need advanced subtitle controls

How AMPlayer Compares to MX Player

The most common question after installing AMPlayer: should I use this or MX Player? Both handle sideloaded streaming apps well. Here’s the honest breakdown.

AMPlayer is lighter, launches faster on Firestick, and handles the D-pad navigation better out of the box. If your main use case is pairing it with a streaming app as an external player, AMPlayer is the cleaner choice — fewer settings to dig through, and it just hands off playback cleanly.

MX Player has a deeper feature set — better subtitle customization, more codec options, and a more polished interface overall. If you’re playing local files with complex subtitle tracks or unusual formats, MX Player earns its place. But it’s heavier, and on a Firestick Lite or older 1080p model, AMPlayer’s responsiveness shows.

My take: if you’re setting up a Firestick for streaming app integration, start with AMPlayer. If you hit a format it won’t handle or need subtitle tools, then add MX Player alongside it.

NV Player is another option mentioned in similar tutorials, but I haven’t seen a strong reason to pick it over the other two for typical Firestick use.

Using AMPlayer With Streaming Apps

The main reason people install AMPlayer is to use it as the external player for sideloaded streaming apps. Once it’s installed, apps like Movie HD will detect it automatically and offer it as a playback option when you tap a stream.

If your streaming app isn’t offering AMPlayer as a player option, open the app’s settings and look for Player or External Player in the preferences — you should be able to set AMPlayer as the default from there. Some apps require you to tap the stream once first, then select “Open with…” to choose AMPlayer.

For apps that pull links directly from Real-Debrid or similar services, AMPlayer handles the handoff cleanly — the premium links play without the stuttering you sometimes get with built-in players.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AMPlayer safe to install? The TROYPOINT Toolbox is one of the most vetted sideloading resources in the Fire TV community. The code (250931) routes to their official toolbox — same source used in their published guides. That said, any time you sideload, a VPN is worth having active.

Does AMPlayer work on Android TV and Google TV? Yes. The same APK works on Android TV and Google TV devices. The Unlinked method is slightly more common for non-Firestick Android TV installs, but the Downloader method works there too.

Why do I need to delete the APK after installing? The APK file stays in your Firestick’s storage after installation and takes up space you don’t need. Deleting it immediately after install is good housekeeping — the installed app isn’t affected.

AMPlayer won’t open after installing. What now? Clear your Downloader cache, then try reinstalling. If it still fails, check that you didn’t install on a Fire TV Stick Select — that model won’t run it at all.
