Stremio on Firestick: Avoid New Vega OS Devices (2026)

Stremio works great on Fire OS Firestick models — but newer Vega OS devices block it entirely. Here's which models to buy, how to install Stremio, and what to do if you're stuck with a Vega OS stick.

Tested on Firestick 4K Max (2nd Gen) 🔄 Updated April 2026 Verified Working

I bought a Fire TV Stick 4K Select last year thinking it was just a rebranded 4K Max. Same price range, same Amazon branding, same little orange remote. I spent twenty minutes trying to figure out why Downloader wasn’t in the app store before I realized I’d walked straight into Amazon’s Vega OS trap — a Linux-based firmware that strips out sideloading entirely. No Downloader. No APKs. No Stremio.

If you’re reading this because Stremio won’t install on your Firestick, there’s a decent chance you’ve got the same problem. Here’s exactly what’s going on, which devices actually work, and how to get Stremio running if you’re on a compatible stick.

Quick Answer

Stremio works on Fire OS Firestick models (4K Max, 4K, Lite, Fire TV Cube) — install it directly from the Amazon App Store or use Downloader code 71893. It does not work on Vega OS devices like the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which block all sideloading and APK installs. If you’re buying a new stick, stick with the Firestick 4K Max (2nd Gen).

What I Tested For

I ran this on a Firestick 4K Max (2nd Gen) on Fire OS 8, with a 500 Mbps fiber connection. I tested both installation methods — the official Amazon App Store install and the Downloader sideload route — plus the Real-Debrid integration that makes Stremio actually worth using. I also spent time documenting the Vega OS situation so you don’t waste forty minutes the way I did.

The Vega OS Problem — Read This Before You Buy

Stremio iconStremioFree

Amazon introduced Vega OS in 2025 on a handful of Fire TV devices — most notably the Fire TV Stick 4K Select. The pitch was faster boot times and better performance. The reality is a Linux-based operating system that removes the Android layer Fire TV has always relied on.

What that means for you: no sideloading. No Downloader app. No APK installs. Stremio isn’t in the official Amazon App Store as a Vega OS-compatible build, so there’s currently no way to install it on these devices.

Here’s a quick breakdown of which models work and which don’t:

Firestick Models — Stremio Compatibility
DeviceOSStremio SupportInstall Method
🏆 Firestick 4K Max (2nd Gen) Fire OS 8 ✅ Full support App Store or Downloader
Firestick 4K Fire OS 7/8 ✅ Full support App Store or Downloader
Firestick Lite Fire OS 7 ✅ Full support App Store or Downloader
Fire TV Cube (2nd/3rd Gen) Fire OS 8 ✅ Full support App Store or Downloader
Fire TV Stick 4K Select Avoid Vega OS ❌ Not supported No install possible

If you’ve already got a Vega OS device, skip down to the alternatives section — there are some decent options, though none quite match Stremio’s add-on ecosystem.

How to Install Stremio on Firestick (Fire OS Only)

There are two ways to do this on a Fire OS device. The App Store method is simpler and gives you automatic updates. The Downloader method still works if you prefer it.

Install Stremio from the Amazon App Store

3 steps
1

Search the App Store

From your Firestick home screen, click the Search icon (magnifying glass) in the top navigation bar. Type Stremio using your remote or the Alexa voice button.

2

Install the Official App

Select the official Stremio app from the search results — look for the developer name “Stremio AD” to confirm it’s legitimate. Hit Get or Download and wait for it to install. This takes about 30-60 seconds on a standard connection.

3

Log In and Add Your Add-ons

Open Stremio, create a free account or log in, then head to Add-ons in the top navigation. Add the community add-ons you want, then pair with Real-Debrid for premium link quality (details below).

Method 2: Downloader Sideload (Downloader Code: 71893)

Use this if you prefer the APK install or want more control over which version you’re running.

Install Stremio via Downloader

4 steps
1

Enable Developer Options

Go to SettingsMy Fire TVAbout → click your device name 7 times in a row. You’ll see a notification that Developer Options have been unlocked. Head back to My Fire TVDeveloper Options and toggle Apps from Unknown Sources to ON.

2

Install Downloader

Downloader iconDownloader Search for Downloader in the Amazon App Store and install it. It’s free and made by AFTVnews — the official one has an orange icon.

3

Enter the Downloader Code

Open Downloader. On the home screen, there’s a code entry field. Enter 71893 and hit Go. Downloader will fetch the Stremio APK directly.

4

Install and Launch

When the download completes, select Install on the prompt screen. Once installed, select Open to launch Stremio. You can delete the APK file afterward to save storage — Downloader will prompt you.

Pair Stremio With Real-Debrid for Actual Good Streams

Real-Debrid iconReal-Debrid

Stremio on its own uses community torrent sources, which vary wildly in quality. Pair it with Real-Debrid and you’re pulling from premium cached links — no buffering, 1080p and 4K sources on most new releases, and noticeably faster load times.

Setup is simple: create a Real-Debrid account, go to Stremio’s add-ons page, and authorize your account in the Torrentio add-on settings. From that point on, Stremio automatically prioritizes Real-Debrid cached links over raw torrent sources.

Real-Debrid costs around $3–5/month depending on your plan — check their site for current pricing.

Alternatives for Vega OS Users

If you’re stuck with a Fire TV Stick 4K Select or another Vega OS device, you’re not completely out of options — but they’re more limited.

Nuvio is the strongest alternative right now. It supports Stremio add-ons natively, adds its own content plugins, and syncs across devices. On Fire OS, you can install it via Downloader code 9231168. Whether it works on Vega OS depends on if Amazon approves an official listing — check the App Store on your device. It’s free to start, with a paid tier for additional features.

Kodi iconKodi

Kodi is the other obvious option, but it’s more setup for similar results — and also requires sideloading on Fire OS, so Vega OS users face the same wall. If you’re on a compatible stick, Kodi’s add-on flexibility is unmatched, though the learning curve is steeper than Stremio.

Honestly? If you’re on Vega OS and can’t get Stremio running, the cleanest solution is to pick up a Firestick 4K Max (2nd Gen) — it’s widely available, runs Fire OS, and supports the full Stremio install from the App Store. The 4K Select is marketed alongside it at similar price points, which is where the confusion comes from.

Protect Your Streaming With a VPN

Surfshark iconSurfsharkPaid

Whether you’re using Stremio’s community add-ons or Real-Debrid links, running a VPN is worth doing. Your ISP can see torrent traffic — and in some regions, that creates throttling or warning letters depending on what’s cached in the links you’re pulling.

I’ve had Surfshark running on my Firestick 4K Max for the past year. The Fire TV app installs directly from the Amazon App Store — no sideloading, just search and install. Hit connect, pick a server, and Stremio traffic goes encrypted from that point forward. It’s on my stick, my wife’s stick, two phones, and our laptop — one subscription covers all of it.

ExpressVPN iconExpressVPN

If raw speed is your priority, ExpressVPN is the alternative — it’s consistently the fastest in my testing, though you’ll pay nearly triple Surfshark’s monthly price for similar streaming results.

Quick Checklist Before You Start

  • Confirm your device runs Fire OS — check Settings → My Fire TV → About → look for “Fire OS” in the OS version field. If it says “Vega OS,” sideloading isn’t possible.
  • Install Stremio from the App Store first — simpler, auto-updates, and no sideloading risks.
  • Add Real-Debrid after install for consistently better streams.
  • Run a VPN before you start using community add-ons.
  • Avoid the 4K Select if you’re buying a new stick — the 4K Max (2nd Gen) is the same price range and fully compatible.
